Natural Zen and Forest Healing
For decades, numerous Western scholars have
been emphasizing the importance of the psychological response to health and
wellness (Chopra, 1993; Benson, 1975; Weil, 1995). However, in recent years,
there has been growing interest in the academic literature concerning the
impact of spirituality and mental health on an individual's healing abilities.
Additionally, they discovered a fourth aspect that has not received enough
attention: our environment.
Since 1992, Teacher Huang Che Xiang (real
name Huang Xianghui) has been spreading the message of forest healing. He
himself suffered from ankylosing spondylitis: an autoimmune condition. Despite
seeking help from both traditional Chinese and Western medicine, trying
numerous folk remedies, and enduring many hardships, he couldn't alleviate the
excruciating pain. Following the suggestion of Professor Lien Wen-Pin at
National Taiwan University Hospital, Teacher Huang began practicing qigong in
the forest, attempting to harness the healing power of nature to unlock the
body's inherent self-healing capacity. He realized that only by unlocking the
body's self-repair mechanism in a natural environment did he have a chance for
rebirth!
Through constant practice and
experimentation, Teacher Huang came to understand that the body could find the
healing it needed in nature. This remedy was not to be ingested but absorbed
directly by the body in a relaxed state. Because of the suffering he underwent,
Teacher Huang was very sensitive to nature and often felt the benefits of
flowers, grass, trees, rocks, and more in repairing his body and mind. During
practice, he stayed extremely relaxed, letting go of other purposes, solely
focusing on his body's health.
Forest and Healing Fortuitous Encounter in
Cypress Mountain As previously mentioned, in spring 1992, Teacher Huang brought
a student with pseudo-paralysis to practice in the mountains. This student's
uncle happened to be a driver at the Cypress Mountain workstation. He suggested
practicing at Cypress Mountain. Upon their arrival, Teacher Huang and the
student met Director Zhou, marking the start of what is known as the
"Cypress Mountain legend." Director Zhou, a forestry graduate from
National Taiwan University, was initially sent to Cypress Mountain to develop
its tourism resources and, most importantly, to clear the fallen trees. He told
Teacher Huang that he wasn't there just to clear the dead trees but to support
Teacher Huang if trees could indeed assist in improving health. As a Southerner
with a strong local accent, he said they could venture into Cypress Mountain
the following day. They would let Teacher Huang choose the place he liked for
his research. Overjoyed, Teacher Huang immediately borrowed the workstation's
phone to contact his family and business partners. Witnessing Teacher Huang's
enthusiastic and voluntary assistance to others and his willingness to
sacrifice his business touched Director Zhou deeply. Despite being a
businessman, he was genuinely driven to help others, which Director Zhou found
impressive. Thus, the next day, Teacher Huang followed Director Zhou into the
pristine forests of Cypress Mountain.
When Teacher Huang reached the 170 line, a
woman was chopping wood and cooking. The fragrance of cypress wood emanating
from the woodpile made Teacher Huang, already highly perceptive, involuntarily
start practicing qigong. It was as though he had entered an incredible state.
Teacher Huang asked the lady what kind of wood she was using for cooking. She
answered that it was cypress wood, easy to burn. This was when Teacher Huang
realized the potency of cypress wood oil. He requested some cypress firewood
from Director Zhou to take back for research. Laughing, Director Zhou teased
Teacher Huang, saying they were just a few useless firewood pieces. Yet, he
allowed Teacher Huang to take a few pieces back to study. At the time, Director
Zhou was unaware of the benefits of cypress wood oil. However, Teacher Huang,
with his high sensitivity, immediately recognized it as a valuable substance.
After bringing back several cypress wood pieces, when his students practiced
qigong and absorbed qi, they were practically going crazy. This further
strengthened Teacher Huang's belief in the exceptional value of cypress wood
oil for many individuals, especially those experiencing health issues.
